NAIDOC Week in the Junior School

NAIDOC Week is a time for our school community to celebrate the rich history, culture, and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Although NAIDOC Week officially fell during the July holidays, we dedicated Week 8 to honouring NAIDOC Week 2024—Keep The Fire Burning! Loud, Blak, and Proud.

The fire symbolizes the enduring strength and vitality of Indigenous cultures, passed down through generations despite many challenges. It reflects a deep connection to the land, community, and the vibrant traditions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Honoring this flame fosters pride and unity, promoting cultural recognition and preservation.

“Loud, Blak, and Proud” celebrates Indigenous identity and encourages embracing heritage with confidence. This theme calls for reclaiming stories, amplifying voices, and pursuing justice and equality, urging all Australians to listen, learn, and engage with Indigenous wisdom and contributions.

Activities in the Junior School included face painting in traditional Aboriginal colours, creating a Pre-Kindergarten – Year 2 collaborative art canvas inspired by the theme, dance sessions, damper-making workshops, special performances at the Senior School assembly, and visiting the Unsung Heroes SPARC showcase. Staff also enjoyed delicious morning tea’s and bake-off’s using native Australian ingredients.

A huge Yanga (thank you) to Mrs. G and the Djook Djinda group for their support. The Junior School students and staff truly came together to Keep The Fire Burning!
